Margaret Mahy was born in New Zealand in 1936 and among other things has worked as a librarian. Her first book, "The Procession", was published in 1961. She became a full-time writer in 1980 and has written over 120 books, mostly for children. She has won several awards, including the Carnegie Medal, and has been presented with the Order of New Zealand.
