Before the first book had even been published, the movie rights were snapped up by Miramax. The project has been delayed by such problems as a bad dollar exchange rate and a disagreement between Miramax and their parent company, Disney. This disagreement was only resolved in early 2005, when it was decided that Miramax and Disney would make the movie together. Since then it seems some progress on the movie has been made.
Director
For a while, Lawrence Guterman was attached to the project. However the movie then spent a while without a director. Now a new one has been hired and although they cannot yet be named "you'd know the name if I said it".
Screenwriters
Numerous names have been connected to this movie: John Stockwell, Dan Gerson, Robert L. Baird and Stuart Beattie. The latter of these is the only one known for sure to have been working on it. He finished a version of the script in late November 2005 and sent it off to the producers. Eoin Colfer has also said he is not working on the script himself.
Cast
Apparently when the movie first went into pre-production, a boy was cast as Artemis. However because the rest of the process was so slow, he grew too old and had to be dropped. No cast members have been officially announced, but the humans will be Irish and the fairies American. Neither Cameron Diaz (the studio's suggestion for Holly) nor Winona Ryder (Eoin Colfer's suggestion for Holly) have the part.
Rumours Debunked: According to IMDb, Timothy Olyphant will be playing Foaly. However, anyone with an account can add information to IMDb. A few sites say Olyphant was "in talks" for an unspecified part. Jason Statham also appeared on the IMDb page for a while but was later removed. There is no confirmation anywhere about either of these possible cast members. (The movie is no longer listed on IMDb due to their eligibility rules; this is not because the film has been cancelled.)
Release Date
No release date has been confirmed.
Rumours Debunked: Many old articles still say that the movie will be out in 2002, 2003, etc. These are out of date and incorrect.
